College Scholarships For Single Moms

Getting the college degree can be one of the biggest steps a mother can make in supporting her up and coming baby or one that she has been taking care of alone. The effort put forth in just making sure the baby has a place to stay while working to pay the bills is much in itself. So how can a single mom get free college money from the Government to go back to school and finish a degree, or take up getting a new degree? After all most jobs don’t pay nearly enough without a degree, and just about anyone going in for an interview needs to have some type of certification or credentials to get a good job even though you might already possess the skills.

Fortunately there is help. We previously mentioned how that we are creating a list of opportunities regarding Pell grants for single mothers. But before we look at that. In speaking generally about getting scholarships, there are all types of programs out there for moms. The basics of getting started would be to go ahead and fill out a free application form for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This is what governs how you will get the grant. Since most of the organizations and state programs require this information to be specific for the type of grant they will be giving you for school.

Another option is to just simply visit a college and ask if you can apply for a federal student loan. If you meet the requirements you can get the loan you need from the Federal Government. Obviously certain criteria are looked at to decide who will get these loans. But in most cases the preferential treatment is given to single moms who are raising a child alone. This doesn’t mean that the entire college tuition and all books and supplies are covered 100%. In most cases the coverage is the bulk of the tuition and some supplies are paid for, but you will still need to come up with a small portion of money which can be paid back later if you can qualify for another loan to cover those costs.

Private organizations have also been formed which help single moms to cover costs as well. Take for example Raise the Nation and Sunshine Lady Foundations which we mentioned in a previous financial aid for single mothers article. These groups have been specially formed to make sure that single moms are successful in their fight to take care of their families and raise their children right. Many of these scholarships can be as high as $10,000. SO make every effort possible to get ahead of the pack by using these resources to the full.
